Bengals in position to make play for Steelers WR Wallace

No news might be good news for the Steelers when it comes to Mike Wallace.

The Steelers have the right to match any offer for Wallace, who’s a restricted free agent. And any team making an offer not only would have to surrender a first-round draft pick but also possess enough salary-cap space to make an offer Pittsburgh can’t match.

I don’t think either the Ravens or the Patriots could make that happen. But let me throw out another team to keep in mind: the Bengals.

The Bengals have two first-round picks and a ton of cap room. They have the ability to put out an offer the Steelers have no way of matching and would give up their first-round pick (No. 21) but still have the pick from the Raiders (No. 17) from the Carson Palmer trade.

So, essentially, the Bengals would have traded Palmer for Wallace and a second-round pick.

I would make that deal.

It’s all hypothetical, of course. I’m not playing general manager for the Bengals, but if you had Wallace on one side of the field, forcing teams to roll coverage to his side, and A.J. Green on the other, you’re going to score a lot of points.
