The Dallas Cowboys are making arrangements to create salary space heading into free agency.

In a move that wasn’t a surprise, the Cowboys released CB Terence Newman on Tuesday. NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported the Cowboys designated Newman a “June 1″ cut for salary-cap purposes. According to the team’s official website, the team would gain an extra $2 million in cap space (and $6 million total) by cutting him after the official start of league free agency at 4 p.m. ET.

La Canfora reported the Cowboys were $2.7 million over the salary cap entering Tuesday.

Before making additional moves in free agency — such as adding a cornerback or an interior lineman — the Cowboys are expected to do more maneuvering. ESPN Dallas reported Tuesday the team has restructured the contracts of OT Doug Free and S Orlando Scandrick, creating $8.56 million in cap space.

NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reported the Cowboys had interest in G Carl Nicks (who most recently played for the Saints) and QB Jason Campbell (formerly of the Raiders), but it is now a priority for them to find depth at cornerback.

The Cowboys also announced the release of K David Buehler on Tuesday.
