The Bears moved quickly in free agency to lock up a backup QB, agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with Jason Campbell on Tuesday, according to league sources.

The Bears, who later confirmed the deal, struggled offensively after Jay Cutler suffered a season-ending thumb injury last season, relying on Caleb Hanie and later Josh McCown. Now the Bears are investing in a backup.

Campbell was debating on what type of deal to take, but he wanted a short-term contract because he wants to start again. He was drawing interest from the Jets and Jaguars, among other teams. But Campbell took the one-year deal from the Bears and can evaluate the quarterback market again next offseason.

Campbell has been followed by a run of bad luck. First, there was all the turmoil (and all the coordinators) in Washington. At his last stop in Oakland, a season-ending collarbone injury last season coincided with the death of owner Al Davis, and the subsequent move by the team to acquire Carson Palmer in a trade.
