Freeney signs with CAA as Colts try to restructure deal

Colts DE Dwight Freeney has signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), league sources said Monday.

Freeney had been without representation since his agent, Gary Wichard, passed away last year. The Colts have been trying to restructure his contract, which calls for a $14 million base salary in 2012 and a $20 million cap charge in 2012.

That maneuver is difficult, given there are no future years to work with, and the Colts’ options on Freeney are limited. His base salary and salary cap hit are difficult to trade.¬†Freeney is set to be a free agent in 2013, and any trade would require a new contract, which an agent would facilitate.
