Lions apply franchise tag to DE Avril

The Lions have applied the franchise tag to DE Cliff Avril, a league source said Monday.

A team source had said last month that the Lions would be willing to use the tag on Avril if it couldn’t work out a long-term extension with him.

Avril has been with the Lions since they selected him in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He registered a career-high 11.0 sacks and forced six fumbles this season.

Monday is the final day that teams can apply the tag. The value of the franchise tag for defensive ends is expected to be $10.6 million for 2012.
