Chargers will not apply franchise tag to WR Jackson

The Chargers have decided not to apply the franchise tag to WR Vincent Jackson, a source with knowledge of the situation said Monday.

The source said the Chargers badly want Jackson to return, but to carry him at the franchise figure now would be cost-prohibitive. The team hopes to re-sign him, according to the source, but doing so could be difficult.

San Diego used the tag on Jackson last season. To use it on him for a second consecutive year would have cost the team approximately $14 million in 2012.
