The Cleveland Browns will apply the franchise tag to kicker Phil Dawson, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
The team also placed the tag on Dawson following the 2010 season, paying him $3.25 million.
The 37-year-old kicker has been with the Browns for 13 seasons, joining the team in 1999, when it returned to the NFL as an expansion squad.
This season, he completed 24 of 29 attempted field goals, or 82.8 percent, including seven of eight of 50 yards or longer.
Dawson’s career completion percentage is 83.1, and he has made 17 kicks of 50 yards or longer.
The Browns signed linebacker D’Qwell Jackson, who otherwise might have been a candidate to receive the franchise tag, to a multi-year contract earlier this week.
