Packers’ Thompson channels George Costanza at combine

INDIANAPOLIS — As Michael Lombardi wrote Friday, the NFL Scouting Combine is one part player convention, one part lying convention. The general managers with the best poker faces are the ones who usually emerge with the most chips in the upcoming draft.

But how do teams balance that secrecy with the fans’ and media’s thirst for information?

Packers GM Ted Thompson has a theory that goes all the way back to a little booth at Monk’s Cafe.

“In settings like this, I try to be informative, but I’m honest when I say I’m not going to (reveal) any trade secrets while I’m here,” Thompson said. “It’s just not going to happen. And I’m not going to lie. I guess you can go the route you can say the opposite — you can be like opposite George on Seinfeld. You know, say whatever is opposite.

“I like to try to be honest, but at the same time, I’m not going to give away information that I think can be used against us. I don’t think that makes a lot of sense. This is a very small fraternity, the National Football League, and once you get to Indianapolis with everybody here, it’s even smaller. So I tell our scouts to listen and don’t talk.”

Thompson’s instincts have mostly been right for the Packers, so he’d be wise to keep doing what he knows best. Otherwise, he could find himself sitting by himself at a local cafe using this Costanza-inspired line: “My name is Ted. I’m unemployed, and I live with my parents.”
