Frazier wants Vikings RB Peterson to take it easy in rehab

INDIANAPOLIS — While Vikings RB Adrian Peterson pinpointed next week as a watershed moment in his rehabilitation from torn ligaments in his left knee, Leslie Frazier urged his franchise’s most important player to pump the brakes.

Peterson has said he plans to start running Feb. 28, but Frazier said Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine that the running back has steps to take before that can happen.

“He’ll do some running in the swimming pool before he actually gets on land,” Frazier said. “So we’ll see how he’s doing and how he’s responding to what he does in the pool before he begins to do some hard-surface running.”

Frazier said he spoke to Peterson on Thursday, and while the running back is “coming along well” and “right on schedule,” the coach also suggested his star needs to “temper his emotions” as he aims to make it back in time for the regular-season opener.

“In his mind, he’s just about ready to run sprints now, but he’s not ready for that,” Frazier said.

Frazier was concerned early on that Peterson’s drive and work ethic could work against¬†him in¬†recovery, but the coach since has come around.

“He’s begun to understand that he’s got to listen to the doctors and go at the pace that they expect him to, not try to force this, because he can do more damage than he realizes,” Frazier said. “So he’s understanding now the importance of following protocol and letting things play out the way they should. Early on, it was a concern.”
