Munchak sees QB competition on horizon for Titans

INDIANAPOLIS — Titans coach Mike Munchak admits to having a nice problem on his hands.

Last year at this time, before drafting Jake Locker and signing Matt Hasselbeck, Tennessee faced nothing but uncertainty at quarterback. Today, with a juicy training-camp competition ahead, Munchak’s only problem is keeping two competitive signal-callers happy when only one can start.

“I think that is the tough part,” Munchak said. “Neither one of them wants the job handed to them. They want to compete for it. …

“That’s what we’ll try to do the best we can — when we start in May, June, and in training camp — is to put them in those situations where they truly are competing and, hopefully, it becomes obvious who should be the best guy to lead the team. … Because you don’t want the quarterback question to be going on every week: ‘Who’s the guy? Who’s the guy?’ ”

Coming off a 9-7 campaign that didn’t produce an AFC playoff berth, Munchak was encouraged to watch the Giants, 9-7 themselves, win Super Bowl XLVI. Both Tennessee and New York won out after standing at 7-7, and it suggests that a scrappy team like the Titans isn’t as far away as some might believe.

Said Munchak: “It encourages your fan base, it encourages, hopefully, your guys on your team, that when you’re standing up there as a head coach, saying, ‘Hey, if we take care of this game and this game, this is what we can do.’ ”
