In an article on NFL.com, former Washington Redskins and Houston Texans general manager Charley Casserly, who has 24 years of experience in NFL front offices, cautions fans to remember that the NFL Scouting Combine doesn’t factor into a player’s grade as much as they might think. But he says the annual event does serve an important purpose.

“The reason the NFL Scouting Combine came into existence was to have an efficient and economical way to obtain a physical on 300-plus players,” Casserly says.

Other thoughts from Casserly about the combine:

On position drills:
“When two players are rated close together on tape, a workout can provide some clarity. The combine provides the first opportunity to compare two players side-by-side in drills.”

On times in the 40-yard dash:
“This can be a misleading measurement for team officials. … I judge a player’s game speed off tape. If his combine 40 seems much faster, I throw it out, because it’s not a true reflection of his game speed.”
