INDIANAPOLIS — So we’re on the set of “NFL.com Live” taping an interview with Robert Griffin III, and I get a million-dollar idea. Or 10 percent of $1 million idea. Okay, maybe 3 percent.

Dave Dameshek is asking Griffin about his nickname, RG3. We’ve been calling him RG3 all season long, and now the Heisman Trophy winner is set to go global.

Dave says Griffin needs a new nickname. And it hits me. Hmm. If the NFL wasn’t an option, he’d be going to law school. And I can’t stand it any more. I have to blurt it out. Because players can’t come up with their own nickname, it has to be bestowed upon them — Griffin even said that himself in our interview.

It can’t be The Judge because that’s too hokey. Patriots RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis already is The Law Firm, so anything with the word “law” is out. But I have it.

“Robert, I think you should go by The Prosecutor.”

Boom.

Dameshek loves it, Adam Rank loves it, and RG3 — sorry, The Prosecutor — gives his assent. It’s started. The Prosecutor. You already can see him in a commercial as a lawyer in a suit, with the jury box made up of defensive players who leap out to attack him. He runs by them, over them, through them, hits them with a gavel or some thick lawbook, and when he steamrolls the final player, the ending could be that player on the ground, in pain, turning to the camera and saying, “The defense rests.”

If this takes off, it’s quite possible my obituary in the newspaper (okay, cyber newspaper) will read: Jason Smith died today at 101. He was widely credited with giving Pro Football Hall of Famer Robert Griffin III his nickname of The Prosecutor. He still never saw the Jets win a Super Bowl.
