Montana’s take: Brady belongs in greatest QB discussion

INDIANAPOLIS — If Johnny Unitas represents the pinnacle of quarterback play for the baby boomer generation, the MTV generation sees Joe Montana in the same light. Four Super Bowl championships and two NFL MVP awards from 1981 to 1990 will do that.

Montana dropped by Radio Row on Thursday, when Patriots QB Tom Brady was a big point of conversation.

During Montana’s stop by the NFL Network set, Steve Mariucci asked the former 49er what Brady had to do to join the discussion as the greatest QB of all time.

“I don’t think he has to do anything,” Montana said. “I think he’s already there.”

I caught up with Montana a few minutes later. He was asked how he compared style-wise to Brady, who hails from the Bay Area and grew up a fan of Montana’s San Francisco squads.

“It’s hard to compare guys. He’s a completely different style of player than I was,” Montana said. “He’s most of the time in the shotgun. I don’t think I ever set foot — well, I did once, and they snapped the ball over my head and Bill (Walsh) said, ‘Forget it, get under the center.’

“He likes to be in the pocket. We all try to stay in the pocket, but I didn’t stay when I didn’t have to,” Montana added. “He doesn’t like to move around, and I think that’s the key to the game this weekend.”

Should the Patriots beat the Giants on Sunday, Brady would join Montana and Terry Bradshaw as the only QBs with four Super Bowl rings. Montana believes it will happen, predicting a three-point New England win.
