Drew Brees hit NFL Network

INDIANAPOLIS — A brief conversation with Drew Brees unfolded Thursday as an NFL Network makeup artist dabbed blot powder on the Saints quarterback’s face.

Not exactly how one imagines meeting the man who shattered Dan Marino‘s NFL single-season passing-yardage mark, however Brees did his best to sum up a promising season that fell just short of a Super Bowl for New Orleans.

“The closer you get to the game, and not make it, I think the harder it is,” Brees said. “And that’s just because you get so close, you’re one of the final teams left. Plus, it felt like this year there was something extra special about it … because …”

In swoops makeup, flicking a brush around Brees’ eyes and nose.

” … Umm, obviously we accomplished some pretty spectacular things, so I think it’s necessary for us to be able to reflect on that and recognize that, but, in the end, the ultimate goal is not the records, it’s the championship,” Brees said. “So unfortunately we came up a little short, but we still have a lot to be proud of and we built a great foundation for the future.”

There was no makeup for Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt, who appears to be constructed out of rocks and steel.

Watt said he hasn’t grown tired of questions about his brief run delivering Pizza Hut and doesn’t regret a moment of it. The mundane employment taught him humility between stints playing college football at Central Michigan and Wisconsin.

“It’s kind of one of those things where I can tell people, ‘I made it. I worked hard to get where I am. You can do it, too,’ ” Watt said.

File this away, Pizza Hut employees prone to daydreams of greatness.
