Countdown to the Super Bowl: 3 days

We are now only three days from the Super Bowl. And to honor that number, we could count the number of rings on three-time champion Tom Brady‘s hand.

But to mark this day, I have another quarterback in mind: Phil Simms. When the Giants beat the Broncos 39-20 in Super Bowl XXI, Simms set an NFL record by completing 22 of 25 passes. In other words, Simms misfired on just three passes the whole day.

Actually, two of those incomplete passes were drops. Simms finished the day with 268 passing yards and threw for three touchdowns. He was easily the MVP of that Super Bowl. His coach, Bill Parcells, called it the greatest performance by a quarterback he has ever seen (and it’s hard to argue against the Tuna). The record still stands after 21 years.

Also noteworthy: Four players have scored three touchdowns in a Super Bowl. The first was Roger Craig against the Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX. Jerry Rice did it twice; first against the Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV and against the Chargers in Super Bowl XXXIX. Ricky Watters also had three touchdowns against the Chargers. Terrell Davis had three touchdowns against the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Seriously, how is Davis not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame?
