INDIANAPOLIS — Bill Romanowski, four-time Super Bowl winner, is pounding a smoothie as we begin our conversation.
It’s strawberry. He’s maybe halfway through when he turns to an assistant: “Get me another one of these.”
Romanowski clearly enjoys making the rounds on Radio Row, and it’s a no-brainer. The former linebacker has a few things to say about preparing for the biggest game of the season:
You have four Super Bowl rings. Can you talk about this week leading up to the game?
Crazy. A lot of distractions. And you know what? The teams that handle the distractions the best and are the most focused are able to win.
You played under Bill Walsh with the 49ers. How did he handle this week?
You want to know what his approach was? You’re playing an away game in a particular city, and that’s where the focus needs to be. When you start thinking “Super Bowl,” you lose focus on what got you there, and that’s playing great football. Excuse me —
And assistant returns with a second shake. Romanowski is double-fisting smoothies.
To me, if you get caught up and think it’s a party, you really have lost it. We had that happen when I was in Oakland (before Super Bowl XXXVII), and guys thought it was a party. Well, guess what? It’s not. You’re here to play football. You’re here to focus. And you’re one of the luckiest people in the world to be able to do this. Listen, if you can’t stay away from a bar or a drink for a week or two? Give me a break. You don’t deserve to be here.
Romanowski eyes the assistant, holding out smoothie No. 2: “Put a straw in this thing.”
You played with Joe Montana. If Tom Brady wins a fourth Super Bowl, how will you compare the two?
They’re winners, OK? When they give you that sense of confidence that you have one of the best of the game. When you have Tom Brady on your team, you expect to win. Joe Montana? We expected to win. John Elway? We expected to win. Even Rich Gannon, we expected to win. Well, guess what? Eli is in that class now.
What are you drinking here, sir?
Lean One smoothie!
You’re double-fisting these babies. Just how many of these do you drink a day?
Two. Well, at least two.
