There’s no point in rehashing all that has gone wrong for the Chargers, who entered the season with high expectations. The team’s current five-game slide has made those expectations a distant memory.

But the dark cloud that’s choking the life out of the Chargers has left us with a new entrant into the coaching hot-seat conversation: Norv Turner. We know miracles do happen, but Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune says it would take just that for Turner to save his job.

“At this point it will take a miracle turnaround for Norv Turner to be the coach beyond this year,” Acee said on NFL Network’s “Around the League” on Monday.

Given the myriad issues facing the Chargers, Acee says the status of GM A.J. Smith is also under review by team president Dean Spanos. Although, the “collateral” Smith has in building the Chargers into perennial contenders could be enough to avoid a full-fledged house cleaning. 

When Turner took the podium for his weekly news conference Monday, his attempt to put an optimistic spin on putting an end to the losing streak was very telling, if not condemning. In short, Turner said many of the Chargers are playing “as good as they can play.”

Translation = The Chargers just aren’t good enough.
