It’s time to talk quarterback blues on a Tuesday. Let’s get it going.
Big Ben owners thumbing, err, bumming: Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is wearing a protective splint on this right thumb to treat a chronic injury that has flared up. The Steelers are on a bye, but Roethlisberger isn’t expected to miss any more time because he previously has played with this injury. But make sure you have a decent backup just in case. Seriously, I had Matt Schaub and Matt Cassel on one of my teams, and I’m looking rather grim because the waiver wire is down to John Skelton and Sam Bradford. Yes, it’s that dire. If you have a chance to grab Jay Cutler, I would do it. Carson Palmer likely is your next best option, too.
Gore might have limited role: Coach Jim Harbaugh hinted that Frank Gore might have a limited role in the 49ers’ game plan this week. Harbaugh expects Gore to play, but the coach did talk about his quality stable of running backs. Make sure to pick up Kendall Hunter this week. Hunter could have a role similar to Ben Tate, where he becomes a good flex option even if the No. 1 running back is playing. The 49ers figure to pound the ball against the Cardinals.
Megatron will play: Lions WR Calvin Johnson said he just “had his bell rung” against the Bears and passed all of his concussion tests, meaning he should be able to go Sunday. Look for the Lions to rebound with a solid effort against the Panthers, meaning Megatron and Matthew Stafford will be excellent starts. Don’t overreact to one bad week by the Lions.
