Hillis’ erratic behavior with Browns nothing new

The Plain Dealer reported Saturday, citing league sources, that the Browns are preparing to move on without RB Peyton Hillis after this season.

It has been a season of distraction after distraction for Hillis and the Browns, after the sides failed to come to terms on a new contract. It seems that now all of the off-the-field drama, combined with the lack of production on the field, has reached a tipping point for the Browns, and NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi said Sunday on “NFL GameDay Morning” that Hillis suffered from similarly erratic behavior when he was with the Broncos.

“People you talk to who are close to Peyton Hillis and knew him in Denver say his behavior in the locker room is similar to what happened in Denver — one of the reasons why Denver wanted to trade him,” Lombardi said. “It was inconsistent, always off the wall a little bit. I think ultimately Cleveland is seeing that, and that’s why they’re backing out of doing a deal right now.”

The Broncos traded Hillis and a couple of draft picks to the Browns for QB Brady Quinn during the 2010 offseason. Hillis rushed for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2010, but he has just 211 yards and two TDs this year.
