Countdown to Kickoff: Chargers seek different No. 1

The countdown is finally down to one — one day until the 2011 NFL season begins. For the San Diego Chargers, who open their season Sunday at home against the Vikings, the number one represents where they finished last season in both total offense and total defense.

Problem is, those No. 1 finishes didn’t help the Chargers get anywhere near No. 1 in the final standings. In fact, the 2010 Chargers were just the fifth team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to finish first in both offense and defense — but the first of those five to miss the playoffs.

Here’s the breakdown of how those five teams fared:
