UPDATE: A Jets spokesman confirmed that McElroy underwent surgery on a dislocated right thumb Friday morning. He will be out indefinitely, but the Jets have no plans at this time to place McElroy on injured reserve.
Jets backup QB Greg McElroy has a fractured right thumb that likely will require surgery, according to a league source.
McElroy, the Jets’ seventh-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, was injured during the second quarter of Thursday night’s 24-14 loss to the Eagles in the preseason finale.
Veteran backup Mark Brunell has missed the entire preseason with a calf injury.
