Niners will release Clements, but door not closed

The 49ers informed CB Nate Clements on Thursday that he will be released, according to a league source.
The sides were unable to work out a new deal after extensive talks, so the 49ers made the decision to release Clements, a move that will save them more than $7 million. The 49ers made Clements the highest-paid corner in the league in 2007 after they signed him away from the Bills with an eight-year, $80 million contract.
It might not be the end of Clements in San Francisco, though, as the 49ers haven’t closed the door on bringing back the 10-year veteran at some point.
