For all these months during the lockout, rookie quarterbacks Christian Ponder and Jake Locker looked like they had inside tracks to be their respective teams’ starters. Then we got back to football, and Donovan McNabb and Matt Hasselbeck were acquired by the Vikings and Titans, respectively, to put the rookies’ hopes on hold.
On their Cover Two podcast, NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks and Steve Wyche feel that Locker got the better end of the deal because Hasselbeck knows where he is in his career — and he’s far more brittle. Both predict that Locker will be starting at some point of the season, whereas Ponder might be going the Aaron Rodgers route, sitting behind an experienced veteran in McNabb, who is trying to kick-start his career.
The Panthers might add a veteran quarterback as well, but the starting job is No. 1 overall draft pick Cam Newton’s to lose, according to the Charlotte Observer’s Joe Person, who breaks down all the Panthers’ moves and unveils some insight on how they’re looking even further down the future for a player who’s still under contract.
Brooks also discusses how the Bills are going to feel the loss of middle linebacker Paul Pozlusny, who signed a free-agent deal with the Jaguars. Wyche said that they might miss him, but he also names a fit that might be even be better.
Get the latest take on all the player movement and also find out why, if Kyle Orton is traded to Miami and joins Chad Henne, players might not be cascading down the aisles singing hymns and shouting “Hallelujah!”
