The Vikings are looking at four to five veteran QBs, a source with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday, and as I’ve been reporting since before the lockout, Donovan McNabb is a top option. The Vikings also are monitoring the Kyle Orton trade market, and Matt Hasselbeck is a possibility as well.
Rookie QB Christian Ponder missed out on an entire offseason of pro development and might not be ready to start. The Vikings, with their strong run game and defense, believe they can be competitive with some decent play from the quarterback position.
The Redskins could receive a nominal draft pick for McNabb, sources said, but his contract would have to be greatly restructured.
Minnesota has long been where McNabb has most wanted to go, and he has a strong relationship with coach Leslie Frazier, but the financial situation could be tight. McNabb might be able to earn more elsewhere, but the chance to win might not be there and the quarterback market could be largely resolved by the weekend, making time of the essence.
