SI’s Peter King talks Manning, Harrison, free agency

NFL Network’s Fran Charles had the chance Monday to sit down with Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King for some insight on prominent players who will be on the free-agent/trade market after the lockout, as well as what lies ahead for Colts QB Peyton Manning and Steelers LB James Harrison.

Here’s a bit of what King said in the interview:

On Manning having offseason neck surgery
“I don’t think this last surgery he had was a serious surgery, but I think it’s serious that a guy who’s an absolute workout-aholic is not able to have a normal offseason. I don’t think necessarily it’s going to play havoc with how he plays early in the season. But it’s just something to worry about, especially at his age (35).”

On potential punishment for Harrison making comments about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell
“For James Harrison to have attacked the commissioner, who is the confidant of (Steelers owner) Dan Rooney — and no two guys are closer — I just think there has to be some repercussions. It’s a tough call; first game of the season is the Baltimore Ravens. But I’d be surprised if they aren’t at least considering suspending him for the first game of the season. Not saying they will, but you can’t tell me that it hasn’t crossed their mind.”

On veteran CB Nnamdi Asomugha being the most-prized free agent
“Without any question, he will (receive the most money). The question is now whether he gets $16 (million), $17 million or if some team, just to cut off all competition, throws $20 million at him on the first day of free agency. I doubt that will happen, but I do think it’s a chance. I think it’s a huge mistake if the Houston Texans don’t go after him hard right out of the shoot.”

On where Kevin Kolb might land and what it will take to acquire him in a trade
“What makes the most sense to me is Kevin Kolb having the same market value as Matt Schaub did when he went from Atlanta to Houston (in 2007). That’s why, to me, it makes the most sense for him to go to a place like Arizona or Seattle. If Charlie Whitehurst had shown a little bit more in Seattle last year, I wouldn’t put them at the top of the list. But they probably need to address their quarterback situation as well.”
