Data Points: Highest third-down passer ratings

There’s no shortage of discussion regarding Kevin Kolb in Philadelphia as rumors continue to swirl the Eagles will deal their backup to Michael Vick.
How big of a risk would Philly by dealing a seemingly talented backup? Much of that depends on your perspective of Vick. Recently we looked at his year-by-year passer rating to gauge how his game has changed and developed.
But another way to ascertain how meaningful a stat can be is to put it under the situational microscope. When it comes to NFL starting quarterbacks, there’s no better way to judge the meaning of passer ratings than to look at performance on third down.
Vick performed admirably in said area last season, although his passer rating on third down (96.9) was slightly lower than his overall figure (100.2). Putting Vick aside, a couple of other names on the list that get it done on the game’s most important down may startle you. One guy is currently without a team, while another is a second-stringer.
