Nearly every day of the locked-out NFL offseason brings about new ideas as to where the prize of the free-agent market, Nnamdi Asomugha, could end up.
While most of the speculation focuses on potential suitors for Asomugha, it’s not often we hear about the teams who should be considered on the outside looking in terms of acquiring the two-time first-team All-Pro. For anyone with dreams of a Darrelle Revis-Asomugha cornerback tandem dancing in their heads, NFL Network information man Jason La Canfora views the Jets as a long-shot. Depending partly on the outcome of the labor negotiations and the number of accrued seasons needed to reach free agency, the Jets will have a number of their own big-name free agents to consider re-signing.
“It all depends on free agent rules,” La Canfora said during his weekly live chat. “Honestly, with David Harris and Santonio Holmes needing new deals on top of all the ones they gave out already the past 18 months, and given that Antonio Cromartie might be a restricted free agent, I’m not seeing them having two cornerbacks making money at the very top of the market. I’d be surprised if they did it.”
As La Canfora mentions, the Jets have signed Revis ($32 million guaranteed), LT OT D’Brickashaw Ferguson ($34.8 million guaranteed) and C Nick Mangold ($22.5 million guaranteed) to significant contracts, which could prohibit a run at Asomugha.
