Kirwan: What Panthers should take for WR Smith

Steve Smith is the latest NFL veteran to put his home up for sale. Smith reportedly wants out of Carolina, and the Panthers reportedly want to oblige the four-time Pro Bowl receiver.

While Smith’s contract will stand as a hindrance to any trade — he’s due nearly $15 million during the last two years of the deal — it’s difficult to rule out any team. Smith evidently wants to go to the Chargers, Raiders or Ravens.

What will the (eventual) market bear for Smith? senior analyst Pat Kirwan had a few ideas during his most recent live chat.

“His age, his health, are not advantages,” Kirwan noted. “I’d think a trade would be something on a sliding scale, starting with a fourth-round pick and becoming a third if he met certain criteria.

“Carolina should take that deal if anyone offers it.”

If the Panthers are willing to deal Smith and then find a suitor also willing to take on his price tag, Kirwan seems to think the team should jump at getting a middle-round pick in return.
