Data Points: Fewer first-round running backs

Alabama RB Mark Ingram, who is visiting the Buccaneers on Thursday, could be the only running back drafted in the first round this year. The last time only one back was drafted in the first round was 1984 (Greg Bell, Bucs), and only once has there been a first round with no running backs taken (1963).
It’s the continuation of a trend that started in the ‘90s. Between the emphasis on the passing game, backfields by committee, and the realization that good running backs can be found later in the draft, first-round running backs are becoming a rarity.
