Kirwan: Palmer not coming back

Quarterbacks were the talk of Pat Kirwan‘s weekly Monday chat on Even former Dolphins quarterback Don Strock stopped by to chat about Florida State QB Christian Ponder.

One of the first questions out of the gate was about Kirwan’s recent mock draft, where he has Cam Newton going to the Bengals at No. 4. This may be a surprise, at least to one of the chatters, but Kirwan says that the reality is that Palmer is not going to play in Cincinnati this year. The only real question, according to Kirwan, is if Newton will even be around for the Bengals to select him at No. 4.

But the Bengals need to select a quarterback at that spot. One reader suggested waiting to take a player like Ryan Mallett in the second round. But Kirwan cautioned that it could be risky.

“I think Ryan Mallett is a fine second round pick,” Kirwan wrote. “But how can you predict that you will get him at pick No. 35? You control pick four. If you miss on Mallett at 35, where do you go from there? I will tell you, if you miss on Mallett, you follow the advice of my good friend Don Strock and go after Christian Ponder.”

Kirwan also talked about the quarterback situation in Seattle, Minnesota and Tennessee, as well as some prospects to keep your eye on. You can read it here.
