Wyche: Newton could be a Viking

In his weekly NFL.com chat, senior writer Steve Wyche offered an answer to a question about what the Vikings might do with their first-round pick. It seemed like a harmless answer – suggesting that Minnesota look at Cal defensive end Cam Jordan, who just happens to be the son of former Vikings TE Steve Jordan.
Makes sense, as Wyche noted the team is losing veteran DE Ray Edwards in free agency.
But Wyche couldn’t leave well enough alone, and he couldn’t answer the question without teasing us with just a little extra:
“On a sidenote,” Wyche wrote in the chat, “don’t be shocked if Minnesota tries to move up to get at Cam Newton if he slides out of the top five.”
Well, that would be fun, wouldn’t it?
Of course, Wyche does have the Carolina Panthers taking Newton first overall in his latest mock draft, but you never know.
So we had to ask Wyche after the chat to elaborate just a little more on the Vikings note.
“The Vikings are going to draft a quarterback, likely in the top two rounds, and if they have a chance to get Newton, they could make a play,” Wyche explained. “If they don’t go quarterback in the first round, they could look at someone like Christian Ponder or Jake Locker in the second. They also plan to acquire a veteran through trade or free agency so there could be someone in place to hold things down while the younger quarterback develops – kind of like how Tampa Bay brought along Josh Freeman.”
