Favre won’t stage comeback with Panthers

Really, it was only a matter of time … sound The Brett Favre Watch!
We first should thank St. Paul Pioneer Press columnist Charley Walters, who got the story rumor started over the weekend by including this little nugget in his “Don’t Print That” section:
Don’t discount the possibility of Brett Favre, who turns 42 in October, returning next season, but not with the Vikings. Maybe Carolina.
Read those words again: Don’t … discount … the … possibility. It seems we’ve already learned (the hard way) not to discount that anything is possible with Favre. But mostly we’re glad Walters did print that in his usual mix of gossip. Call that one the ultimate throwaway line. Something we would otherwise completely ignore but are now paying attention to without football sustenance to chew on. Even for a few fleeting moments.
Because, in case you really were wondering, Panthers beat man Darin Gantt of The Herald was also paying attention and ran the idea by his team sources. As you would expect, it didn’t stick. Gantt said it’s “not happening.”
“Ran it up the flagpole early this morning, and the response was swift and sure,” Gantt wrote. “Maybe somewhere. But not here.”
Exhale, Panthers fans. You too, Charlotte-area media.
On the way out: If Favre did return to the NFL, which team would you like to see him play for?
