Breer: Panthers should go defensive line

NFL Network’s Albert Breer joined NFL fans for a chat on Tuesday, just four weeks and two days before the draft. The big question, of course, is what do the Panthers do with the first overall selection?
The Panthers have been linked to a quarterback, a defensive lineman, and just about every scenario that does not include bringing back former QB Jake Delhomme.
So how about it, Albert? If you were the general manager of the Panthers, what would you do?
“I’d be doing everything possible to drop down a few spots and … then … when that proved difficult to do … maybe (draft Alabama DL) Marcell Dareus,” Breer wrote. “Those interior defensive linemen are invaluable, Dareus has proven to be versatile as they come, and he has a boatload of experience playing at a high level. But then, I’m not a scout, so take it for what it’s worth.”
A mild surprise considering that some fellow experts are thinking that the Panthers go quarterback. But Breer believes that one of the biggest draft-day surprises will center around the quarterback.
“I’d say the biggest surprise would be that only two quarterbacks go in the first round, and both are in the Top 5,” Breer wrote. “[Cam] Newton and [Blaine] Gabbert gone quickly, and [Jake] Locker and [Ryan] Mallett drop into Round 2. Is that surprise enough?”
