Iowa certainly has its fair share of intriguing draft prospects, and that was evident at the school’s pro day on Monday, with representatives from 20 teams on hand to watch 14 players work out.
No Hawkeye caught the attention of pro scouts more than DE Adrian Clayborn, who looked really good in his workout in front of D-line coaches from Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Arizona, and Cincinnati. Clayborn (6-3 1/8, 278 pounds) did a vertical jump of 35 ½ inches and a broad jump of 9-6. He posted a time of 7.08 seconds in the short shuttle and did 17 bench-press repetitions at 225 pounds.
The number of lifts could be a slight concern, because Clayborn is not as strong as most DEs, but he is very explosive. He’s got a great first move, which is why he will be a top-20 pick.
Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi also did himself some good Monday with a workout that was superior to his performance at the NFL Scouting Combine. Stanzi (6-4 1/8, 224) ran 4.93 twice in the 40, had a 34-inch vertical, a 9-7 broad jump, and ran 4.56 and 7.23 in the short shuttle and 3-cone drill, respectively, to go with 16 bench-press reps. He definitely helped his stock, which is good since he had an audience of QB coaches that included Carolina and Baltimore.
Other notable players to work out:
DL Christian Ballard (6-4 ½, 286) — He ran 4.70 twice in the 40, had a 34-inch vertical and 9-7 broad jump, posted times of 4.56 in the short shuttle and 7.23 in the 3-cone drill, and did 16 strength lifts.
DL Karl Klug (6-3 1/8, 275) — He ran 4.81 and 4.83 40s, had a 29 ½-inch vertical, a 9-5 broad jump, and ran 4.60 and 7.01 in the short shuttle and 3-cone drill, respectively, to go with 21 strength lifts.
OL Julian Vandervelde (6-2 ½, 302) — He ran 5.09 and 5.13 40s, had a 30-inch vertical and a 9-foot broad jump, ran a 4.44 short shuttle and 7.14 3-cone drill, and did 25 strength lifts.
DB Tyler Sash (6-0, 210) — He ran 4.61 and 4.66 40s, had a 33-inch vertical and 9-4 broad jump, and 14 bench presses. He didn’t do the shuttles.
LB Jeff Tarpinian (6-2 1/8, 235) — He posted times of 4.56 and 4.57 in the 40, had a 37-inch vertical and 10-5 broad jump, posted times of 4.10 in the short shuttle and 6.78 in the 3-cone drill, and did 16 strength lifts.
