Pouncey steals the show at Florida’s pro day

Mike Pouncey may not have quite the same potential as his twin brother — Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey — but the Gators guard/center continues to move up boards in advance of next month’s NFL Draft.

Pouncey was one of 18 NFL hopefuls who took part in the University of Florida’s March 15 pro day. Assistant coaches from 22 NFL teams were in attendance at the outdoor, grass-field event, including Mike Tice of the Chicago Bears, Sean Kugler of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pat Flaherty of the New York Giants, Andy Heck of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Pat Morris of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Pouncey — 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds — put on a impressive show for the coaches, working himself into a near-certain first-round pick with an outstanding workout. He kept all of his combine stats, but delivered a standout positional workout at the Swamp.

Maurkice was an immediate impact player in his rookie season with the Steelers, starting 16 games in the regular season and earning a Pro Bowl nod as a rookie. Mike — who shifted from guard to center when Maurkice graduated from Florida — doesn’t have the same ceiling as his brother, but has the makings of a very good player at the pro level.

Pouncey was one of several offensive lineman on display:

Carl Johnson (6-5 5/8, 359) had a 25-inch vertical jump, 8.26 three-cone drill, and kept the rest of his combine numbers.

Marcus Gilbert (6-6 1/4, 333) had a 40 time of 5.53, 30 1/2-inch vertical, 5.02 three-cone drill, and a 8-2 broad jump.

Maurice Hurt (6-2 5/8, 323) had 40 times of 5.44 and 5.46, 29-inch vertical, a 4.85 short shuttle, 8.13 three-cone drill, and a 8-1 broad jump.

Defensive back Will Hill had a strong workout, though off-the-field issues will likely cause him to fall on draft day. Hill (6-2, 208) had 40 times of 4.68 and 4.73, a 34 1/2-inch vertical, 4.21 short shuttle, 6.94 three-cone drill, and a 10-5 broad jump.

DB Ahmad Black also worked out. Black (5-9 3/8, 187) had 40 times of 4.83 and 4.85, a 36 1/2-inch vertical, 4.11 short shuttle, and a 6.77 three-cone drill.
