Report: Patriots work out Maryland WR Smith

With plenty of holes to fill defensively, it would figure to make sense that the Patriots go in that direction with one — or both? — of their two first-round picks.
But New England is clearly taking a look at all options with the 17th and 28th picks, holding a private workout Tuesday with Maryland receiver Torrey Smith, according to National Football Post, which cited a league source.
Smith is a speedster who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.43 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine. The 6-foot-1, 204-pounder is coming off a junior season in which he posted some big numbers — 67 catches for 1,075 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s a late first rounder in Pat Kirwan’s latest mock draft.
Would drafting Smith — or, more bluntly, ignoring a defense that ranked 25th overall last season — be prudent to New England? Weigh in below.
