Newberry College hosted its pro day on March 14, providing a showcase for several free-agent hopefuls, including strong safety Ron Parker and defensive back Kamaal McIlwain.
The event, held outdoors on FieldTurf, was attended by representatives from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers. Five players worked out — three from Newberry and two from Pikeville College.
Parker (6-feet, 200 pounds), a two-time second-team All-American and two-time first-team All-SAC selection, had 40-yard dash times of 4.36 and 4.36, a 9-7 broad jump, 4.15 short shuttle, 6.74 three-cone drill, and 16 strength lifts.
McIlwain (5-10, 185) ran 40 times of 4.36 and 4.77, a 10-3 broad jump, 4.26 short shuttle, 6.78 three-cone drill, and 16 strength lifts.
Parker and McIlwain also went through positional workouts. Neither had their verticals recorded because Newberry didn’t have the necessary equipment.
Both players performed well, and will increase their exposure when they work out again at Coastal Carolina’s pro day on March 28.
