Big crowd expected for Newton, Fairley workouts

AUBURN, Ala. — They still talk about Miami’s pro day in 2004 when an estimated 125 NFL coaches, GMs and scouts showed up to see one of the best draft classes a school has ever assembled — six prospects who went on to get selected among the top 19 picks.

It might get topped here today when Auburn holds its pro day. Athletic department officials are anticipating a crowd of NFL coaches and pro personnel types that could exceed Miami’s 2004 numbers. That doesn’t include the expected 100 members of the media who were credentialed for the event.

Already seen here this morning were head coaches Ron Rivera and Marvin Lewis. Both have picks among the top four in the draft, and both are sure to take long, hard looks at The Big Two.

The headliners, of course, are QB Cam Newton and DT Nick Fairley, but those guys are only leading the parade; 22 players in all will be measured, tested and run through drills starting at noon local time today. Newton’s workout will come near the end of the session that probably won’t wrap up until 5 p.m.

Among Auburn’s other prospects to work out include: WR Darvin Adams, RB Mario Fannin and OL Daniel Ziemba.

I bumped into Newton, who promised to improve on his subpar throwing performance at the combine two weeks ago. “I let you down at the combine,” he told me. “I’ll make up for it today.”

The Auburn athletic department is putting on a barbecue for all of the NFL coaches and pro personnel people. Let’s hope they don’t run out of sauce.
