Harbaugh: Smith can get fresh start with 49ers

The rumblings that Alex Smith could end up right back where he started in San Francisco haven’t slowed down, especially in the wake of coach Jim Harbaugh‘s recent comments about the former first overall pick.
“Well, I like Alex,” Harbaugh said during an interview on KNBR, per the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. ”And I like being around him and I like what I see on tape. It’s come up a lot and it’s really not that complicated of a thing. This is a very somewhat simple thing. We’re going to get the best possible quarterback we can on our football team and then we’re going to throw the ball out there and they’re going to compete for it.”
It’s a noticeable change in tenor for the new coach of the 49ers. There’s some open love for Smith going on.
“I’m not going to hide my feelings,” Harbaugh added. “I like Alex Smith, I like him as a football player, as a person and he’ll make the best decision for him. Some people say Alex Smith needs a fresh start — needs a new place to be or whatever. I say let that place be here.”
As we’ve discussed, given the uncertain labor situation and it’s impact on free agency, it’s a thought that a return could be a win-win scenario for both Smith and the 49ers. More than ever, it seems like Harbaugh is on board.
