MOBILE, Ala. — It’s not quite like the Tebow-mania that took over Senior Bowl Week last year, but Jake Locker is certainly at the center of attention in 2011.
As soon as he walked on the field to prepare for practice, NFL Network reporter Stacey Dales approached him and conducted an interview. When he took command of the huddle for the first time in drills, the mass of coaches, scouts and media paid close attention.
The former Washington Husky was projected to be a potential top-five pick had he come out following his junior year, but an inconsistent senior season dropped his stock a bit.
Now, he’s here in Mobile looking to reclaim his elite status and convince scouts he still has franchise-quarterback ability.
So, how did he perform? Well, in a very limited sample size, he showed some of the physical ability and toughness that made him such a highly touted quarterback. He got out and made a good, solid block on a reverse and threw a tight spiral on an out pass. He later did 7-on-7 drills and did not throw an incompletion.
Expect him to be heavily scrutinized on everything he does this week as teams try to decipher if he can be a starting caliber NFL quarterback, and count on the NFL Network and NFL.com to track his progress closely.
