We got to see Devin Hester like we had never seen him before on Monday night.
No, not when he returned a punt 64 yards during the third quarter, setting the NFL record with his 14th career return for a touchdown. We’ve seen that. It was at the postgame podium, though, when Hester delivered a very emotional postgame news conference, showing just how much the record means to him.
“Coming out of college, coaches told me that I would never be more than a kickoff and punt returner,” Hester said. “That I would never earn a position in the league. But I’m here today to say that I am a kickoff and punt returner, but at the same time the best to ever do it. All the comments that I had from coaches, it hurts me, but I’m glad that they said it because, right now, I couldn’t say today that the Chicago Bears are the best [return] team that would ever do this. We’re not going to stop on this one return. There will be plenty more. Don’t dwell on this record-breaker. It’s going to be a lot more than this. I guarantee you that.
Emotions got the most of Hester when he paid tribute to the guys who block for him.
“I really love those guys, you know?” Hester said. “I know the success, and everything, is from those guys. It’s hard. I hate sitting here and taking all the glory. I wish the other 10 guys were up here and you were asking them the questions, because they deserve to be up here. … Those other 10 guys, each and every day, they wanted it [more] than me.”
Some great moments, and a side of Hester we haven’t seen. He definitely keeps it real.
