Perhaps the lives of everyone around NFL Nation are just a little bit better today having watched the longest kickoff return in NFL history by an offensive lineman.
Devin Hester … Dante Hall … Gale Sayers … Leon Washington… and Dan Connolly.
All those names now appear in the same sentence.
It was beautiful to watch Connolly’s display of skill. Not only did he cradle the rock with both hands, set up his blockers, sprint to daylight and deliver a stiff-arm to Charlie Peprah (who might be dreading Monday’s video session), Connolly actually cut against the grain. He cut … against … the … grain. Awesome, and only four yards from fame.
After a brief overnight respite from football, Monday’s first order of business was to check out the video comments of Connolly’s return, and outside of the “Comment is abusive and has been removed” crowd (way to contribute and bring something to the table, Colts fans), there were some quality posts:
fuhrman: There are beautiful throws, nice catches, smart interceptions and then there is THIS the most awesome thing to happen all year!
quarterback2409: As a Patriots fan this has to be my favourite play of all time. I think for those 14 seconds the football nation was behind the Patriots, whilst most of the Packers were behind Dan Connolly! Respect to all the other teams for not hatin us for once even it was for a few seconds. . . I know it’s hard to bite your lip! I’m sure trash talking will be back in order soon! Enjoy week 16 everyone!
marathon2554: Had to watch it 6 times before it sunk in cant stop laughing did you see Brady’s face lmfao
bobthehun: You the man connally. You did my heart good. Ive watched it 10 times, can’t get enough. taken care of the rock. you’ve emblazoned yourself on the mind of the american psyche. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
While the play didn’t crack Bill Belichick’s postgame shell, my first reaction was the same as Marathon2554. The look on Tom Brady’s face was priceless once he realized what was happening — a look of total amazement, like someone had just stolen his man-Uggs.
Hopefully, all of NFL Nation enjoyed those 15 seconds, regardless of affiliation. Thank you, Dan Connolly, for my favorite moment of Week 15.
