For the less intense football fans, here’s an important question I haven’t seen asked yet: Where does Derek Anderson’s postgame rant after Monday night’s loss to the 49ers rank among the NFL’s all-time best meltdowns?
Beyond someday being morphed into commercials for beer companies, the classic meltdown — where emotions temporarily block out sanity — leaves us with such fond memories.
Here’s one blogger’s list:
6b. Randy Moss
Moss returns to New England to say he misses his teammates during an impromptu news conference. He’s pretty even-keeled as far as meltdowns go, but he does come up with the concept of self-interviews. Bonus points.
Money quote: “If it’s going to be an interview, I’m going to conduct it.”
6a. Bill Callahan
A borderline meltdown, but had any other coach uttered the phrase, it probably would have caught on.
Money quote: “We’ve got to be the dumbest team in America.”
5. Terrell Owens
Maybe more breakdown than meltdown, but the über emotional Owens seems to have gotten a pass for his tear-filled news conference and his defense of Tony Romo.
Money quote: “It’s my quarterback.”
4. Herm Edwards
Love Edwards’ body language. An accomplished motivational speaker, Edwards is exasperated, at the end of his rope, and completely loses it.
Money quote: “We play to win the game.”
3. Mike Ditka
Pick pretty much any Ditka rant and I won’t argue. In terms of sheer volume, Da Coach is probably at the top of any list. This meltdown is from 1999.
Money quote: “If you were 2-7, you would be in a bad mood, too.”
2. Dennis Green
Despite the play of Rex Grossman, the Bears rally against the Cardinals and inspire the best of the best from the always quotable Green, who once went third person in saying, “If you’re looking for Dennis Green, he’ll be on the high road.” Plus, Green hits the podium for emphasis when he comes unglued.
Money quote: “They are who we thought they were.”
1. Jim Mora
Mora’s appeal is his honesty. Less meltdown than the others, but perhaps the most memorable and could be viewed as the inspiration for Allen Iverson’s infamous “practice” quote. Plus, Mora delivered two deserving catch phrases.
Money quotes: “In my opinion, that sucked” and “Playoffs!? Don’t talk about playoffs?! You kidding me? Playoffs?”
