Fantasy enthusiasts have nary a kind word for some NFL coaches, including the Chiefs’ Todd Haley, the Ravens’ John Harbaugh and Gary Kubiak of the Texans. And it goes without saying that Mike Shanahan is the Hans Gruber of fantasy football.
Does Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt deserve to be on this list?
There are more than a few people who would agree. Many of them are NFL.com video editors who graduated from USC and still believe that Matt Leinart is the greatest quarterback ever. EVER! But there is a growing sentiment that Whisenhunt has crushed the fantasy value of players like WR Larry Fitzgerald and RB Beanie Wells.
That might be too simplistic. It completely overlooks the fact that the Cardinals have been fantasy (and NFL) relevant during Whisenhunt’s tenure. He smartly chose to go with the Kurt Warner Machine instead of pressing ahead with Leinart. And really, because Warner signed a two-year deal, the Cardinals were kind of stuck when the future Hall of Fame quarterback retired. So he can get a mulligan on Derek Anderson.
Most of Wells’ problems have stemmed from his inability to stay healthy. Whisenhunt told reporters on Monday that Wells missing practice during the week has caused his diminished playing time. So if Wells can practice this week, he will likely go back to getting the majority of the carries.
Maybe Whisenhunt has not yet landed on “The List” quite yet. Give him another season to get a high-profile quarterback (Donovan McNabb anybody?) or take a rookie in the draft, and then we will make a decision.
