“Hey, Nolan, can your mother reduce our taxes?”
That was one of many requests Miami Dolphins rookie CB Nolan Carroll heard from his teammates last Wednesday, after his mother, Jennifer Carroll, was declared Florida’s new lieutenant governor that morning along with the state’s new governor, Rick Scott.
Carroll was at his mother’s headquarters in Fort Lauderdale the night before until the wee hours of the morning as election results poured in. He then went home to catch up on his sleep before reporting to Dolphins practice.
“It was one of those things that you’ll remember for the rest of your life,” says Nolan of his mother’s election night. Things weren’t actually decided until Wednesday morning when the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Alex Sink, conceded.
“We congratulate Jennifer tremendously,” said Dolphins coach Tony Sparano of her election. “Our players’ families are part of our family here, so we’re really proud of her.”
In light of the fact that Veterans Day is this Thursday, it’s worth noting that Jennifer Carroll spent 21 years in the Navy and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
“She’ll listen to everybody,” says Nolan. “And she‘ll work her hardest to make sure that she satisfies the people.”
One thing she won’t have to work hard on was the request of Nolan’s teammates to reduce taxes — Florida does not have a state income tax.
