La Canfora examines coaching hot seat

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora takes a look at four coaches he considers to be on the hot seat during or after the season: Marvin Lewis, Mike Singletary, Lovie Smith and Wade Phillips.

Despite a 1-6 start, 49ers ownership continues to support Singletary, committing to him through the end of the season. La Canfora believes, “barring some miracle,” the team will make a coaching change for 2011, linking names such as Jon Gruden and Russ Grimm to a job he says everyone expects to be open.

In Chicago, team president and CEO Ted Phillips set the bar high for both Smith and GM Jerry Angelo. La Canfora links Bill Cowher to the job, one of the locations he recently suggested were on the former coach’s short list.

One of the hottest topics has been the job security for Phillips amid a 1-5 start by the Cowboys. La Canfora notes Phillips is “without question” in danger, but Jerry Jones isn’t likely to make an in-season change. After recently linking Jeff Fisher and Sean Payton as favorites of Jones’, La Canfora floats the suggestion an interim coach could take over for 2011 until a high-profile name becomes available.
