Eagles coach Andy Reid just announced that CB Asante Samuel is out this week because he failed his concussion test. Reid also announced that QB Michael Vick is out, too, with RB LeSean McCoy questionable. Although that was rather expected.
Samuel’s absence increases the value of 49ers WR Michael Crabtree.
The 49ers certainly made a concerted effort to get Crabtree the ball against the Falcons in Week 4, but once again, the 100-yard mark eluded him. (Even after I boldly predicted that Crabtree would have his first 100-yard game last week. And since I crow when I get one right, it’s fair to point out when I’m wrong.)
Even with Samuel out, I might not go out on that limb with Crabtree again. The Eagles currently rank fifth in passing defense, but are near the bottom in rushing defense. The 49ers need to win this game and coach Mike Singletary needs to rely heavily on the running game, so I would expect a big game from Frank Gore. Expect Gore to have a similar game to the one he had against the Saints in Week 2 (112 rushing yards, 56 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns).
Although, can this be the last game that the 49ers play on prime time? Enough is enough.
