Panthers’ Steve Smith carted off with ankle injury

The Panthers lost star WR Steve Smith to an ankle injury Sunday against the Saints, and did not return.

Smith was injured when his left foot was caught underneath a defender at the end of a 5-yard reception.

Smith had to cross the field to get back to the Panthers’ sideline, and he limped severely while walking under his own power. Trainers removed Smith’s left cleat on the training table and appeared to check his foot and ankle before the receiver was carted off the sideline.

Brandon LeFell and David Gettis opened the following drive at receiver for the Panthers.
