Chargers’ Mathews sidelined by ankle injury

UPDATE: NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reports, via a league source, that Mathews’ injury appears minor and was held out for the rest of the game because the Chargers didn’t want to take any chances with their first-rounder in a blowout win over the Jaguars.
The Chargers have lost rookie RB Ryan Mathews early against the Jaguars due to a right ankle injury, and his return has been announced as questionable.
Mathews was injured late in the first quarter when he was caught in the pile and bent backwards following a 3-yard run. Trainers removed his cleat on the trainers table, and carted him off the sideline soon thereafter.
The Chargers are rolling offensively without Mathews, relying on Darren Sproles (51 total yards) and Mike Tolbert (2-yard touchdown run), so Mathew’s absence hasn’t been felt.
