Mayock: Kolb is starter in Philly, and a work in progress

One of the hot topics this week has been the potential of a quarterback controversy in Philadelphia, where starter Kevin Kolb hasn’t passed the most recent phase of tests following a concussion and backup Michael Vick took the first-team reps on Wednesday.

While it’s looking more and more apparent that we’ll see Vick as the starter in Week 2, NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock echoed the thoughts of several other analysts when he said during his weekly live chat that Kolb is the unquestioned starter right now in Philly.

“Patience is a virtue, and you need to understand Kolb is a work in progress. I thought he played poorly prior to the concussion, but I also expected that. The only way to learn how to play QB in the NFL is to take some licks in live combat. This is a year for Kolb to learn how to play the position, and for the young Eagles to transition with so many new faces.

“Kolb is the starting QB for the Eagles, regardless of injury. The Eagles are fortunate that they have a confident and exciting backup in Vick. But the Eagles need to commit this season to find out if Kolb is the QB of the future.”

Mayock told me he doesn’t expect this to change, unless Kolb struggles deep into the season. Take a look at the entire chat transcript for more knowledge from Mayock.

Might be time to take a deep breath on this one, Philly.
